In 2024, three lawyers who had assisted people in accessing euthanasia in Peru and Colombia joined forces to create a shared project that would capitalize on the progress, alliances, and agendas in the region around the right to die with dignity. As a result of this alliance, Plataforma Dignidad (Dignity Platform), a Latin American and interdisciplinary network dedicated to promoting the right to die with dignity, was born.
In Latin America, the right to decide how, when, and where to die is far from being a reality. Our healthcare systems marginalize autonomy when it comes to end-of-life decisions, and our laws still largely criminalize medical assistance in dying. Furthermore, our experiences are ignored by narratives from the Global North. At Plataforma Dignidad, we seek to combat these injustices: we believe that a dignified death is a human right, not a privilege.
Plataforma Dignidad was born as a collective call to forge our own paths. We work to connect experiences, share knowledge, and build alliances with the goal of transforming how we understand the end of our lives. Only this way can we guarantee that each person decides how to navigate that final stage, according to their wishes, values, and beliefs.
Today, Plataforma Dignidad brings together more than 60 people from 8 Latin American countries, committed to advancing the right to die with dignity in the region.
